Ajax v Celtic betting preview

November 5th, 2013

Celtic travel to Amsterdam to face Ajax on Wednesday in a game televised on Sky Sport 4 from 7.45 pm.

The Dutch champions have just one point from their opening three Group H games from a 1-1 home draw with Milan, while Celtic have three points courtesy of their 2-1 win in the reverse fixture in Glasgow last month.

Both sides know that this is a must win game if they are to harbour any hopes of progressing to the last 16 and bookmakers think that Neil Lennon’s side will struggle at the Amsterdam Arena - they can be backed at odds as big as 19/5 with BetVictor. Ajax are available at best odds of 5/6 with Paddy Power, while the draw is 14/5 with Bet365.

While Ajax are themselves on a bad run of form, the fact that Celtic have lost 23 of their last 25 away games in the Champions League (W1,D1) offers up little hope for Bhoys supporters. Odds of 5/6 on the hosts represents a 55% chance of them winning, but given Celtic have lost 92% of those last 25 away games, it actually appears rather good value.

Celtic lost their last two European away fixtures 2-0 - to Milan in September and also to Shakhter Karagandy in the qualifying stages; in fact they also failed to score in the previous qualifying game away from home against Elfsborg (0-0) and so we fancy a couple of couple of home win correct scores ‘to nil’ in this one. You can back 1-0 at 15/2 with Coral, while a 2-0 home win is 9/1 with BetVictor.

With regards to goal scorers for the hosts, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson provides the most obvious threat. The talented Icelandic striker has helped his national side reach the World Cup play-offs with 5 goals in their last 5 World Cup qualifiers and he can be backed at generous odds of 13/2 to score first with Paddy Power (as short as 9/2 elsewhere). Back that each-way - Paddy Power offer 1/3 the odds for the ‘place’ in this market, if your player scores any of the first 5 goals in the game.

Finally, if you fancy a ‘scorecast’, why not place a couple of small stakes bets on Sigthorsson / Ajax 1-0 at 35/1 and Sigthorsson / Ajax 2-0 at 40/1 - both with BetVictor.
