Man City v Liverpool betting

December 24th, 2013

Top of the table Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day to face Manchester City, who sit just a point below them in the table.

Bookmakers think that City will make it 9 out of 9 at home in the Premier League this season - they are available at best odds of 4/5 (William Hill & Paddy Power), while Liverpool can be backed at 19/5 (BetVictor) and the draw at 16/5 (Bet365).

City have certainly been rampant at home in the league - scoring 35 goals in just 8 games, an average of over 4 goals per game. Crucially however, they will be without their top goal scorer Sergio Aguero, who has scored 13 league goals already this season - 8 at home.

Not that City lack for offensive cover, with the likes of Alvaro Negredo who already has six league goals at the Etihad this season, plus Yaya Toure (5 home league goals) and Samir Nasri (4 home league goals).

Of course, Liverpool have a striker in some form themselves. Luis Suarez has already scored 10 league goals in December - no other Premier League player has scored more than 8 goals in a calendar month before and Suarez has two games to go! The Uruguayan has 5 goals in 5 away games in the Premier League so far this season and can be backed at stand-out odds of 11/8 with Ladbrokes to score in this game.

Liverpool won their last league away game 5-0 at Spurs, but previously had won none of their previous 4 games on the road (D2, L2) and they would surely be delighted to pick up a point on Thursday. Not that history suggests a draw is unlikely - 6 of the last 9 league games between these sides have finished in a statemate.

Given the attacking options of both sides a high scoring game should be anticipated (Bet365 offer the best odds of 1/2 on 'over 2.5 goals') and a better way to play this could be to perm a few high-scoring correct scores. The last 3 games between these sides have all finished 2-2, so we'll start with that and also back a 3-1 home win (both results are 13/1 with BetVictor), plus a 3-2 home win at 20/1 and 3-2 away win at 33/1 (both with Bet365).

Finally, in the Christmas spirit, we'll have a couple of festive scorecast bets on Luis Suarez to score first and the game to finish 2-2 and Alvaro Negredo to score first and the game to finish 2-2 - both at odds of 55/1.
