Newcastle v Arsenal betting

December 28th, 2013

Top of the table Arsenal travel to Newcastle on Sunday for a game televised live on Sky Sports 1 at 1.30pm.

This is sure to be a challenging fixture for the league leaders - Newcastle have won 7 of their last 9 league games (D1, L1), including victories over Man Utd, Spurs and Chelsea.

But bookmakers still make Arsenal their favourites, at best odds of evens with Bet365 and William Hill. Newcastle can be backed at 3/1 with the same bookmakers, while the draw is available at  27/10 with Bet365.

One reason for this is that Arsenal have only lost 1 of their last 12 visits to St James Park - although it's interesting to note that 7 of those 12 games finished as a draw. Another reason is that, along with Spurs, Arsenal have collected the most points (19) away from home in the Premier League so far this season.

Many fans will remember the 4-4 draw between these sides back in February 2011, when Newcastle came back from 4-0 down, and also last season's 7-3 scoreline at the Emirates (won by Arsenal).

But, before assuming this game will see loads more goals, it's worth noting that Arsenal's last two visits to St James Park have seen just one goal (0-1 to Arsenal last season and 0-0 the previous season); thus a bet on 'under 2.5 goals' looks the value call at odds of 23/20 with BetVictor.

As far as goalscorers are concerned, Yoan Gouffran will look to extend his run of goals at St James Park - he has now scored in 5 consecutive league matches at home and can be backed to score first at odds of 11/1 with Betfred, Sky Bet, William Hill and Paddy Power. However, we prefer the stand-out price of 5/1 with Betfred that the French striker scores at any time in the game.

Olivier Giroud has scored 18 goals since arriving in the Premier League, but incredibly only one of these goals were scored outside of London and for the visitors we prefer a bet on the in-form Theo Walcott, who has scored 4 goals in his last 2 away games for Arsenal.

The English striker is 8/1 with Bet365 to score the first goal - back that each-way as Bet365 offer 1/3 the odds for the 'place' in this market (if your player scores at any time).
