Southampton v Chelsea betting

December 31st, 2013

Chelsea head to the south coast to face Southampton on New Year's Day - a game that is televised from 3pm on BTSport 1.

The Blues have won 3, drawn 3 and lost 3 of their Premier League away games so far this season, but bookmakers make Jose Mourinho's side favourites to win this game at best odds of 11/10 (Paddy Power & Ladbrokes), while the Saints can be backed at 3/1 and the draw at 13/5 - both with Betfred.

Mauricio Pochettino's Southampton started the season with just 1 defeat in their first 11 Premier League games (W6, D4), but they have since won just 1 of their next 8 (D2, L5).

One of those defeats was to Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge ealier this month, when Mourinho's side came from behind after Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring, but Southampton did beat Chelsea 2-1 in the corresponding fixture at St Mary's last season.

John Terry scored in both of those games and it may be worth backing the Chelsea skipper at 10/1 with Paddy Power to score at any time in this game.

Bookmakers make Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba the favourites to open the scoring, but given that no Chelsea striker has scored a Premier League away goal in 2013 you would be well advised to look elsewhere.

At the prices, an each-way bet on Ramires to score first at 18/1 with Bet365 is advised - Bet365 offer 1/3 odds for the 'place' in this market, if your player scores at any time.

For the hosts, Jay Rodriguez could be the man to follow again - he has scored 5 goals in his last 7 Premier League games including that goal at Stamford Bridge and can be backed at 8/1 with Bet365 to score first.
