Sunderland v Man Utd betting

January 6th, 2014

Sunderland host Manchester United in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final on Tuesday - a game televised on Sky Sports 1 from 7.45pm.

United are available at best odds of just 1/5 (Bet365 & Sky Bet) to qualify over two legs, while Sunderland can be backed at 4/1 with Ladbrokes to make it to Wembley.

David Moyes' side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Swansea at Old Trafford on Sunday - a second successive 2-1 home defeat and their fourth home defeat since the start of December. Indeed, they'll probably welcome an away game having won 7 and drawn 4 of their last 11 games in all competitions away from Old Trafford.

Sunderland won their FA Cup third round against Carlisle on Sunday, but sit bottom of the Premier League table with just two home wins (D1, L7) and bookmakers offer best odds of 4/1 (Betfred & William Hill) on them beating United on Tuesday, while the visitors can be backed at 4/5 (BetVictor & Ladbrokes) and the draw at 14/5 (Sky Bet & Betfred).

But Gus Poyet's side did knock out Chelsea (in extra-time) in the quarter-finals and they will be confident of getting something from this game - especially with van Persie and Rooney likely to be unavailable for United.

With those two in the side, United won the league fixture here at the Stadium of Light in October with two goals from Adnan Januzaj, after Craig Gardner's early goal had given Sunderland a deserved half-time lead. Junuzaj can be backed at 8/1 with Bet365 to open the scoring in this game, or 11/4 to score at any time.

Gardner is 16/1 with Sky Bet and Coral to repeat the feat and open the scoring, or a generous 7/1 with 888sport to score at any time, but at the prices we'd prefer a bet on Jozy Altidore to open the scoring at 9/1 with Sky Bet and Paddy Power. United struggled to cope with Altidore's physical approach in that league game and the powerful striker was unlucky not to score a header that was saved magnificently by David De Gea.

There have only been seven goals in the last five games between these two at the Stadium of Light, including three 1-0 away wins, and we strongly fancy a bet on 'under 2.5 goals' in this semi-final first leg at the 21/20 offered by Stan James (all other bookies are odds-on).
