Salford v St Helens betting

February 26th, 2014

Salford entertain St Helens on Thursday night with both sides defending 100% starts to the season after the first couple of rounds. Salford have cruised past London Broncos and edged out Wakefield, while Saints made light work of Warrington in a superb performance and then beat Hull FC by 12 points.

This will certainly be Salford’s sternest test thus far and Brian Noble’s side are boosted by the return of Adrian Morley, although Darrell Griffin and Rangi Chase will be missing.

The team news coming out of Saints is all strong, with Nathan Brown bringing Mark Flanagan into his 19-man squad ahead of a fixture Saints will be expected to win. They have a superb record in this match-up, having lost just four of their 33 Super League matches against Salford over the years. Flanagan is unlikely to start the match with Brown expected to name an unchanged team from the opening two matches.

The bookies have installed St Helens as their 1/3 favourites and while we think they’ve got the match winners right, its debatable whether they are such strong favourites given they are playing away in this one, and we’d prefer to take a small chance on Salford with a 10 point head start at even money with Bet365. There could be the odd try in it, but expecting St Helens to win by two clear scores may be a touch optimistic.

In the player betting, we’ll go with Adam Swift to open the scoring, who now has 19 tries in 17 Super League appearances for Saints. At just 20 years of age, he’ll continue to get better and better and we reckon the 8/1 on offer about him scoring the first try of the match could be worth investing in.
