Holland v Costa Rica betting
Costa Rica take on Holland at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Saturday (9pm BBC1) - the fourth and final World Cup quarter-final.
Holland are a best price of 8/15 with Coral and BetVictor to win in 90 minutes, while Costa Rica can be backed at 7/1 and the draw at 10/3 - both with Bet365.
This is the first time these two sides have ever met, but Costa Rica’s record against teams from Europe in general isn’t great - they have one victory in their last seven encounters with European sides (D3, L3). However, that victory was against Italy earlier in this tournament, and they also drew against England.
It’s interesting to note that Los Ticos have scored in all but one of their nine World Cup matches against teams from Europe, and a bet on both teams to score in this quarter-final at best odds of 6/5 with William Hill makes some appeal - the Dutch have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 11 World Cup knockout matches.
The Netherlands also have a habit of conceding first and then coming back to win - they have done so in their last four World Cup games in which they have gone 1-0 down. With that in mind, a speculative wager on Costa Rica to score first and Holland to win at 21/2 with BetVictor appeals (as short as 5/1 elsewhere). Alternatively, you can just back Costa Rica to score first at 13/5 with Bet365.
Arjen Robben has been the subject of intense media attention following his recent performances, for both the positive of playing exceptionally well and the negative of diving too much. How he hasn’t been booked for diving yet is a mystery to us, but with his admission of diving against Mexico and his clear dive for the winning penalty receiving a great deal of social media coverage, we like the market on Robben to be booked for diving in this game at 11/1 with 888sport (in their Player Specials).
Finally, Wesley Sneijder has scored in each of his last five World Cup knockout games and so he is worth backing to score any time in this quarter-final at 13/5 with Bet365.
That last bet appeals even more when you consider that Bet365 are refunding losing First/Last/Anytime Goalscorer, Half-Time/Full-Time, Correct Score and Scorecast bets in all World Cup matches that finish 0-0 after 90 minutes. There have been 8 stalemates in regular time at this World Cup (14%), including 3 of the 8 knockout games so far (38%).
