Singapore Grand Prix 2014 tips
Ahead of the Belgian and Italian Grand Prix, Red Bull supremo Christian Horner explained that whilst his team remained optimistic for a strong end to the season, that would all have to wait until the low-downforce circuits were out of the way. A win for Daniel Ricciardo, as well as a fifth place, and a fifth and sixth for for Sebastian Vettel since then have been very welcome indeed, and Red Bull now return to a circuit which really plays to their strengths.
Unfortunately for them, it also looks like Mercedes remain as dominant as ever after the first exchanges on Friday, while Fernando Alonso was also impressive in P1 and P2, but Red Bull should remain closely behind the silver cars.
While Ricciardo has had the measure of Vettel all season, it is the latter who looks the better value investment this weekend, despite a troubled preparation for the race following engine troubles. Vettel has dominated this event for the past three years and odds of 11/4 in the betting without Mercedes certainly appeal.
Further back, the Toro Rosso pair of Kyvat and Vergne have been impressive thus far this weekend and the pair can be backed at 11/8 each for a points finish. Those odds look fair enough, but we’d prefer to gamble at the big prices for a Top 6 finish, which could become achievable if events conspire to reduce the number of finishers come Sunday. Adverse weather could hit the track and the unforgiving walls, and potential engine and brake difficulties facing the teams might just give us that prospect. You can back them at 14/1 (Vergne) and 16/1 (Kyvat) to finish in the first 6.
On the long run pace from Friday, Torro Rosso looked superbly placed, just behind Mercedes and Red Bull, and while we don’t expect them to be quite that close, they could well compete with Force India and Ferrari to cling onto the better scoring points places.
