Liverpool v Real Madrid tips

October 21st, 2014

Reigning European Champions Real Madrid travel to Anfield on Wednesday night to play Liverpool in what is one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the Champions League so far, and the game is televised live on SkySports 5 from 7.45pm.

Surprisingly, these European giants have only previously met three times in this competition (including the 1981 European Cup Final) and the Reds have won all three games without conceding a goal. They are the only side with a 100% success rate against Real Madrid in the Champions League - having beat them home and away in the 2008/09 season (4-0 at Anfield and 1-0 at the Bernabeau).

Real have won both their Champions League Group B games but Liverpool have won one and lost one - and they need to get a result here to stay clear of Basel in the fight to qualify from the group (Basel are 9/5 with Ladbrokes to qualify, Liverpool are 8/15 with Bet365).

Liverpool have been rather hit and miss this season in the Premier League, and just scrapped home against QPR on Sunday when two own goals saw them beat the Premier League's bottom team 3-2. Real Madrid meanwhile have won six of their first eight La Liga matches and are in third place.

So, it’s no surprise that Real are favourites to win, with William Hill offering the best odds of 17/20, while Liverpool can be backed at 7/2 and the draw at 3/1 - both with Bet365.

News from the Bernabeau is that Gareth Bale misses the game and although a blow, their strength in depth means that they could easily win the game without him. However, with them having one eye on Saturday's clash with Spanish rivals Barcelona in El Clasico, best odds of 6/4 with BetVictor on 'Under 2.5 Goals' looks a fair price, especially with Daniel Sturridge still out for the Reds.

Raheem Sterling's pace and close control usually offers him numerous goal scoring opportunities, and his three goals this season could have been more. He looks Liverpool’s most potent threat and we suggest backing him each-way at 10/1 to score the first goal with Paddy Power, who offer 1/3 odds for the 'place' in this market - if your player scores any of the first 5 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more Champion League goals away from home than in front of his own fans (32 home, 35 away, 2 neutral) and he is just two behind Raul’s record of 71 Champions League goals. This season Ronaldo has scored an incredible 19 goals in 12 games and in no less than five of those 12 games he has scored at least two goals - he simply must be backed to score the first goal at best odds of 4/1 with Ladbrokes, while Coral offer the same odds that he scores 2 goals or more.

Real have lost only one of their last seven away games in Europe (W5 D1) and we expect them to win this game - let’s back them to win 1-0 (10/1 with BetVictor and Betfred) and 2-0 (12/1 with BetVictor).
