Southampton v Man United tips

December 6th, 2014

Southampton welcome Manchester United to St Mary's Stadium on Monday (8pm SkySports 1) for the first Premier League game to be contested by two Dutch managers.

The Saints can be backed at a huge looking 15/8 with BetVictor and Ladbrokes, while United are available at best odds of 13/8 and the draw at 5/2 - both with Bet365.

United have been getting better under Luis van Gaal and now find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table - but it must not be forgotten that Southampton are one place and one point ahead of them in fourth. Also, just 6 of United's 25 points so far this season have won away from home (W1, D3, L2).

Whoever wins, assuming either side does (last season both games finished 1-1), an interesting bet is on the First Team To Score market. Southampton have scored first in 4 of their last 5 Premier League games against United and they have also scored first in 5 of their last 6 home games, so we suggest taking Bet365's 11/10 on them scoring first again.

Neither of the Saints players who scored against United last season (Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana) are still at the club, but for our money the Southampton players are too big a price to score first as we think the odd makers have overestimated United's chances of winning this game - which is reflected in all the derivative markets.

We therefore suggest backing both Graziano Pelle to score first at 6/1 with Paddy Power and Shane Long at 7/1 with Bet365 - both each-way.

For United, Wayne Rooney has scored 5 goals in his five league games against Southampton and can be backed at stand-out odds of 6/1 to score first with Bet365, but with those stats on Southampton scoring first against United, we would prefer to back him to score at any time in the game at 2/1 with Bet365 (as short as 6/5 elsewhere).

This fixture usually sees plenty of goals and both teams have scored in 14 of their last 17 Premier League meetings (including the last 5), and with both Dutch managers enjoying to see attacking football, our number one bet for the night is to back 'Over 2.5 Goals' at evens with BetVictor. This bet would have won in 17 of the last 21 games between these sides!

Finally, with some decent offers available for this game and goals expected, consider some high scoring Correct Scores. You can back Southampton to win 3-1 at 25/1 with Betfred - who refund losing Correct Score bets, up to £50, on all live TV matches that finish 1-1 (the score here last season).

Also, Sky Bet are offering to refund all losing Correct Score bets, up to £25, on this game if both teams score - so at the odds we recommend backing Southampton to win 3-2 at 33/1 and United to win 3-1 at 22/1 with them.
